Looking for a quick, healthy side dish? We know it can get a little tricky coming up with a healthy side dish that tastes good. While we face little to no problems in the meat category, vegetables are more often than not overlooked whilst prepping for a BBQ party. Today we’ll share with your the how to whip up a Chinese-style garlic green beans that can be ready in 15 minutes and will pack your dinner plate with a punch of umami.

Cooking Tips

The secret to these BBQ green beans is that you cook them in super hot oil, hot and fast. We’re not talking about a vat of oil. They’re not fried like French fries. They’re just wok-fried. To heat the oil, place the green beans in the wok over a bed of medium-hot charcoals. You should be able to hold your hand over the coals for 6-8 seconds before feeling the urge to pull it away.

Then, add the green beans. We recommend trimming the tips off. You can choose to use either the traditional string beans or Chinese long beans too if you can find them at your local grocery.

They should start to steam and soften in the oil in about 4-6 minutes.

Next, it’s time to add some umami to your BBQ green beans! Add a splash of water, vinegar and Worcestershire with garlic, salt and pepper. Be extra careful at this step as it’ll cook really fast. This is due to the high heat of the pan so the liquid may splatter. You may choose to don an apron to prevent spillage on your clothing. Thereafter, stir it quickly. You want the beans to blister, but you don’t want the garlic to burn. This step only takes 45 seconds to a minute. As soon as you get that beautiful color, pull them from the heat.

TADA! You have made yourself some healthy and delectable BBQ green beans to serve as sides!
